Despite decades of progress in tobacco control, nicotine and how it is consumed by adults still remains a question mark for many. What are the risks? Do they change based on how the nicotine is delivered? Are smoke-free nicotine products better alternatives to continued smoking?

While smoking cigarettes continues to be the primary cause of tobacco-related disease and death, growing evidence supports the harm reduction potential of smoke-free alternatives. Yet, misperceptions persist – among the public, policymakers, and even healthcare providers – about the health impacts of nicotine and the relative risks based on how it’s consumed.

What does the science behind all of this actually say about nicotine? Are medical professionals up to date on their research? How should the Food and Drug Administration modernize its role in regulating tobacco products? What tools are available to federal agencies and advocates to better protect public health – especially for youth and vulnerable communities? And what will it take to shift the national conversation around nicotine, smoking, and better alternatives?

Join The Hill on May 21 for the release of the latest US Medical Professionals Survey, and an in-depth discussion with lawmakers, public health experts, and consumer advocates. We’ll examine current misperceptions, the opportunities and challenges of smoke-free products, and what it will take to accelerate an end to smoking in America.
